Stéphane Carrel documented the long and difficult physical rehabilitation of Steven McRae, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet in London, after tearing his Achilles heel. The French director has turned the story of how he fought to get back to dancing, into the beautiful and moving documentary titled, “Resilient man”.

“In this film, I wanted to show and tell the fragility of life, the vulnerability of a person, but also his ability to get up again,” explains Stéphane Carrel, who is fascinated by the extraordinary fate of Steven McRae.

This brilliant dancer from Australia was discovered by the director of the renowned Royal Ballet School in London, who suggested that he enroll as his student after winning the 2003 International Dance Competition in Lausanne. Steven then left Australia and moved to London on his own. From then on, he worked furiously and climbed the career ladder to eventually become principal dancer of the Royal Ballet in London. His commitment and passion were overwhelming.

Tragically, at the height of his fame, he suffered an Achilles tendon injury and collapsed on stage. His career seemed to be over.

Two years of rehabilitation passed accompanied by his coaches and the company's medical team, before he completed a special rehabilitation program with the aim to get back to his highest level. Against all odds, Steven McRae hoped to return to the stage and dance the most prestigious roles in the repertoire. The documentary by Stéphane Carrel follows his struggle to return to the stage and shows how important it is to maintain your health, regardless of your ambition, in order to continue following your dreams.
