SRG’S CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Last May, SRG published an analysis of its cultural contributions. The study represents an important first step in providing information on the broadcaster’s cultural activities.
According to Suisseculture, ensuring the continuity of this study will be essential for maintaining a reliable overview of SRG’s cultural contributions in the future. More than one quarter of the analyzed content is devoted to traditional culture and folk music. More specialized cultural fields such as literature and language, visual arts, and the performing arts each account for less than five percent of SRG’s cultural coverage and programming.
Suisseculture recognizes the pressure created by audience ratings, particularly for economic reasons and especially during prime-time broadcasting. It therefore understands why SRG tends to prioritize “traditional, audience-friendly, and media-compatible forms of culture” in its programming.
At the same time, the umbrella organization is concerned about the growing marginalization of more demanding cultural content and the decline of programs that offer in-depth discussion of cultural issues. The study also demonstrates the need to distinguish more clearly between culture and entertainment without setting them in opposition to one another.
One encouraging finding is that SRG’s cultural programming contributes more effectively to the visibility of artists than many established cultural institutions. According to Suisseculture, the study should be continued annually and accompanied by a clearly defined methodological framework in order to provide a solid basis for the future evaluation of SRG’s cultural contributions.
The organization has expressed its willingness to contribute its cultural expertise to this process and thanks SRG for its collaborative approach to issues that are of crucial importance not only to the cultural sector but also to SRG itself.
