Two new books shed new light on dance. They explore ritual dance pedagogy and modern dance in Ulm a century ago. They provide approaches for conducting dance workshops, demystify, and offer new perspectives on the power of dance.

The book “Rituelle Tanzpädagogik – Die Kunst, die Gemeinschaft zu tanzen” (Ritual Dance Pedagogy – The Art of Dancing Community) bridges animistic dance traditions of West Africa with humanistic psychology. Author Stephanie Bangoura demystifies ritual and transforms it into an educational tool: introducing animism and humanistic psychology, offering a rich repertoire of practical tools for workshops (group techniques, talking circles, trance improvisation, live music, creation of symbols and myths), and concluding with a reflection on the role of ritual dance in self-decolonization.

The third volume “Der Sturz in körperlose Tiefen” (The Fall into Bodiless Depths) of the “Edition Stadthaus – Sonderausgaben Tanz” highlights leading figures of modern dance and the interplay of dance and politics, with special focus on Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, and Felix Klee. It concludes the trilogy on the history of dance in Ulm from the early 20th century to World War II. It offers in-depth analysis of the dark years and political tensions that shaped the German dance scene. The book spotlights key figures of modernism such as Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, Felix Klee, and Helge Peters-Pawlinin, with “Cameos” by Harald Kreutzberg and Dore Hoyer, illustrating the stylistic diversity and experimentation of the era.

With texts by Karla Nieraad and illustrations by Eduard Keller, the book shows how modern dance not only engaged with the political and social challenges of its time but also advanced innovative body languages and forms of expression that influenced later generations. The publication traces the aesthetics, bodies, and imaginations of modernism in Ulm, offering scholars and enthusiasts a valuable historical and critical perspective.
